Photography through my eyes:
Photography is an area where I focus on details. My images depict objects from many perspectives, perhaps isolating components from their normal environment in order to take in and analyse them more than might have been possible from the usual viewpoint. Yet the final anylisis hardly ever happens because I am constantly awed by the unexpected beauty in the details and substructures.
Enchanted Series
Like oysters, crusty French bread and salt-rimmed margaritas, orchids are an acquired taste.
Max Fulcher, 1999
I agree with Max Fulcher's concept that orchids are enchanted. He relates travel stories and anecdotes with humour and describes many orchid varieties he's encountered and collected (Fulcher M, 1999. The Enchanted Orchid, New Holland Publishers, Sydney). This unassuming book, plucked off a bookstore shelf purely on the basis of the front cover image, has been a source of joy and introspection for the many years I have owned it. It was the triggering inspiration for my Enchanted series of images on display in the Moment in Time joint exhibition in the ArtHouse Hotel Gallery (275 Pitt St Sydney) extended to until 4th April 2014. A steel sculpture of a bloom was also inspired by the book and my photographic exploration of the plant.
The images were originally intended to inform a steel sculpture but close inspection of the subject resulted in renewed awe at the beautiful components of this plant. The images are all framed and the majority are available for purchase. Here is a photo of the final phalaenopsis orchid on display in the Mosman Art Gallery as part of their Society 20th Anniversary Exhibition.
